That 5-minute fix that ate my whole Saturday with a tape deck

Picked up a thrift store cassette deck for $15 and it kept eating tapes. Turned out the idler tire just needed a new rubber ring, but I spent 6 hours diagnosing it because I assumed the belts were the issue. Has anyone else chased the obvious problem while the real one was hiding in plain sight?
