Spent like 2 years cleaning my turntable needles wrong before I figured it out

I always used to scrub back and forth like I was cleaning a window. Then last week I was at a friend's place in Portland and he just dabbed it once from back to front. I asked him about it and he showed me the little brush is supposed to just go one direction. All that time I was probably just grinding gunk into the grooves. Has anyone else had a similar moment where you realized the simplest thing was the thing you kept messing up?

Wait, is that not how it works? lmao I spent like three whole weeks going back and forth with customer service because I thought you had to "prove" you wanted the refund. Pretty sure I sent like six emails just repeating myself and they must've been so confused.
