Some guy at Goodwill told me my $8 cassette deck was junk because it's not 'real hi-fi' and I can't stop thinking about it
I was standing in line at the Goodwill on 5th with a Yamaha KX-330 cassette deck I found for $8 and the guy behind me looks at it and goes 'those belt driven ones are junk, you want direct drive or don't bother.' I just nodded and paid but it bugged me the whole drive home. Thing is, I got it working that night after swapping the belts I ordered for like $6 and it plays my dad's old mixtapes just fine. I'm not trying to master anything, I just want to hear the songs. It made me think about how many people probably walk away from this hobby because someone told them their gear wasn't good enough to bother with. I've been fixing old tape decks and walkmans for about a year now and the cheap ones are the ones I actually use. Anyone else run into this gatekeeping stuff or is it just me?
