Shoutout to the guy at the Portland repair cafe who told me to never clean a game cart with alcohol
I picked up a copy of Super Mario World at a garage sale in Beaverton for 8 bucks, and it wouldn't boot no matter how many times I blew on it or reseated it. I brought it to a repair cafe downtown Portland, and this older guy named Walt watched me pull out a Q-tip and a bottle of isopropyl. He put his hand over mine and said, and I quote, 'That stuff will eat the label and dry out the pins, use a pencil eraser and then some distilled water on a cloth.' I kind of rolled my eyes because everyone on YouTube says alcohol is fine. But I tried his way first since it was his bench, and the cart fired up on the first try after about 30 seconds of erasing the contacts. Two months later I got cocky and used alcohol on a dirty NES cart anyway, and the label started lifting at the corner. So Walt was right and I was the stubborn one. Has anyone else had alcohol mess up a cartridge, or did I just get a bad label to begin with?
