Refoamed my 1977 speakers with kit glue, now the bass sounds hollow. Should I redo it with proper glue or is this a break-in thing?
I got a speaker refoam kit off eBay for like 22 bucks and followed a YouTube video from some guy in Ohio. I used the glue that came with it, which felt kinda like school paste. After letting it dry 48 hours, I played a test track and the low end sounds weird and loose, almost like the cone is flapping. I've refoamed one pair before with the proper butyl glue from Simply Speakers and they sounded perfect after a day. My buddy says cheap glue changes the compliance and I need to peel it all off and start over. Another guy at the repair shop said give it a week of playing and the surrounds will soften up and seat. Anyone else hit this? Is cheap kit glue actually ruining the sound or am I being impatient? I'd rather redo it now than wait a month and still hate it.
My first refoam job used that same runny glue and the bass sounded like a wet sock for two weeks, then it settled in fine. Give it a week of steady playing before you peel anything, that loose sound is usually just the surround not being worked in yet.
