My 1979 Technics turntable belt melted into goo after sitting in my hot garage for 6 years

I found it last Tuesday and spent 3 hours cleaning sticky black residue off the motor pulley with isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush, but the pitch control still drifts, so has anyone tried replacing those old pots with new ones or should I just hunt down a replacement unit on eBay?
