Just realized I spent two weekends cleaning my turntable platter with the wrong stuff and a cotton ball was the fix
I was using paper towels and rubbing alcohol on my Technics SL-1200 for months and could not figure out why the speed kept drifting, until a guy at the shop in Portland told me the lint was gumming up the spindle bearing, so what did you all learn the hard way about cleaning your gear?
Wait, are you sure it was the lint causing speed drift? On a 1200 the platter just sits on the spindle, it doesn't ride on the bearing, so cotton ball fuzz shouldn't really mess with speed. Speed drift on those is almost always the pitch fader or the pots needing a shot of Deoxit, or the brake in the motor. Not saying the cleaning didn't help, but I'd keep an eye on it and maybe hit the pitch control if it comes back.
