Hot take: I thought the 'warm your vinyl before playing' tip was nonsense, then I tried it on my copy of Rumours
So I picked up a used copy of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours at a flea market in Akron for $6 about two months ago, and the first few spins sounded kinda flat and crackly. This older guy I know who has been collecting since the 70s kept telling me to warm the record up before playing it, like set it near a radiator for 10 minutes or use a hairdryer on low from a foot away. I rolled my eyes honestly, because it sounded like one of those audiophile myths that just makes you feel special. But one cold night I was bored and tried it with my wife's hairdryer on the lowest setting, just sweeping it back and forth over the grooves for maybe 30 seconds. I dropped the needle and the difference was real, the vinyl felt softer somehow and the highs came through way cleaner, less surface noise on 'Dreams'. I have done it about 8 times since then and it works every single time, which still kinda bugs me because I hate admitting the old guy was right. Has anyone else tried this, and does it actually hurt the record long term or am I just getting lucky?
