My $70 lens adapter ruined a whole roll of my grandma's party photos

Last month I bought one of those cheap lens adapters online to put an old Pentax lens on my Canon body. I thought I was being clever saving money, but the aperture ring was loose and it let in light leaks every time I moved the camera. Got the roll back from the lab on Tuesday and every single one of the 36 shots has a weird orange streak across the corner. I spent $70 on the adapter plus $18 on developing and film, and now my grandma's 80th birthday is all messed up. Anyone else trust those bargain adapters and regret it? I'm thinking of just sticking to the kit lens until I can afford a proper one.
