Lost a whole roll of holiday pics to a dodgy film spool

Finally got my film back from the lab after Christmas and every single shot from my trip to visit family in Portland came out blank. Turns out the spool on my Canon AE-1 didn't catch right and the film never advanced past frame one. 36 frames of pure nothing, including my niece's first birthday cake moment. Has anyone else had a film spool just straight up betray them like that?

36 frames of pure nothing" - oh man, that is just brutal. I felt sick reading that, especially with the birthday cake part. I've had a roll come back with like half the shots ruined by light leaks, but never a full roll of blanks like that. The worst part is you don't even know until weeks later when you get the film back, so there's no chance to reshoot anything. I hope you at least got some phone pics of the cake moment.

Nailed it @foster.dylan, the birthday cake part is what really hurts. Nothing like watching your camera turn a celebration into a mystery box of disappointment lol. I bet the cake was probably delicious though, at least you got to eat it while mourning your film. Hopefully the phone photos turned out okay, because otherwise that's just a double whammy of sadness.
