I quit taping my film canisters shut after a light leak ruined 12 frames

Used to tape every single roll like a maniac until one slip let the edge gap open and fried half a roll of Portra. Now I just press the canister lid down firm and load in the bag - way less hassle and no leaks since.

Three rolls of Portra 400 cost me $75 last spring because I trusted the canister lid seal. The factory lids are garbage on Fuji and Ilford films especially, they pop open in the changing bag if you breathe wrong. I tape every single roll with gaffer tape now and I run a fingernail along the edge to make sure it's flush. Lost two frames to a light leak on a job that paid $200 and I learned my lesson the hard way. You got lucky with your lid press method but that's not something I'd bet a paid shoot on.

Used to think everyone was just being paranoid about the canister lids, but then I had two rolls of Fuji 400H come back with a orange streak right through the middle of every shot. That nail along the edge trick is actually smart, I've been finding factory lids don't click shut the same way twice in a row especially after they've been opened once. Tape is just cheap insurance compared to losing half a roll of Portra on a paying gig.
