Guy at the flea market taught me to check the backing paper date before buying old rolls
Ran into this older photographer at a thrift stall in Portland who pointed out that expired film is fine if the backing paper hasn't oxidized, but if it's yellowed it'll leave crud all over your shots. Has anyone else ever peeled open a spent roll just to inspect the paper before loading it?

Honestly peeling a spent roll isn't necessary, just smell the backing paper for vinegar instead.

Three years of darkroom work and I've never once smelled the backing paper for vinegar. If you're processing correctly the smell is usually gone after a good wash anyway. Seems like overthinking a pretty basic step.
