Appreciation post: finally got a roll back that wasn't totally black
After five straight rolls of nothing but black frames from a shutter I thought was working, I took my old Canonet to a shop in Denver and had them test the speeds. Turns out it was stuck at 1/500 no matter what I set. Now I know to test every shutter speed before I waste another roll of Portra 400. Anyone else have a camera that lied to them for months?

Man that Canonet shutter thing is brutal. I had a Yashica Electro 35 that did the exact same thing, except it was stuck at 1/30th not 1/500th. So everything came out blurry and I thought I was just a terrible handheld shooter for like three months. You really gotta pop the back open and watch the blades move at each speed, just like haydenburns said. Or tape a piece of paper over the film gate and watch the light hit it. It's annoying to waste a roll but way better than wasting ten. At least now you know and the Canonet is a solid little camera once it's sorted.
