Why does nobody talk about the difference between scanning with a flatbed vs a DSLR setup?

I've been shooting 35mm for about two years now, mostly developing at home in my bathroom. Last month I scanned a roll of Portra 400 with my Epson V600 like always, then tried a friend's DSLR setup with a macro lens and a light table. The difference in sharpness and color depth was night and day, especially on the shadows. Am I missing something with my flatbed technique, or is the jump to digital camera scanning really that big for most people?
