Thought the hype around stand developing was just internet talk

I kept seeing people online say you can just let your film sit in developer for an hour with no agitation and get great results. Sounded too lazy to be true honestly. Tried it with a roll of Tri-X 400 last month using Rodinal at 1:100 dilution. Just let it sit for 60 minutes in my bathroom and poured it out. The negatives came out with way less grain than my usual agitation method and the contrast was perfect. Made me wonder how many other shortcuts I dismissed without testing.

Wait, is this just another one of those things where the "proper" way is actually overcomplicating stuff? I've been noticing this in so many areas lately, like cooking where everyone swears you gotta babysit something but then you leave it alone and it turns out better. People love to gatekeep simple methods and act like you need special skills or fancy gear. Your Rodinal experiment pretty much proves half the "rules" we follow are just habits nobody questions.

Same thing happened to me with developing my own stuff. I had this whole routine down for 35mm with constant agitation, then tried stand developing with a roll of HP5 in HC-110 at 1:119. Left it in there for 70 minutes while I watched a movie. Came back and the highlights were way more controlled than usual, with way less hassle. Kinda made me realize that all the fussing I did before was just me being scared to mess up.
