Shot a whole roll with a yellow filter and it totally changed my contrast

I compared a roll of HP5 with and without a yellow filter on the same street corner in Brooklyn, and the difference in the sky and brick textures was night and day. Has anyone else found a filter that just clicks with their favorite film stock?

Gotta disagree here. Yellow filters on HP5 always felt like they just flattened the midtones for me, making brickwork look muddy instead of textured. Maybe your street corner had different lighting, but I've never seen it improve contrast in a way that couldn't be done in post.

Different lighting might be the thing here. I shot HP5 with a yellow filter at golden hour in an alley with red brick and it pulled out this nice separation between the sky and the buildings without crushing the shadows. Tried the same filter on a grey overcast day near a modern concrete block and it looked exactly like you said - flat and lifeless. So I think it really depends on whether the scene has warm tones to work with in the first place. Did you ever try it on a sunny afternoon with some wood or sandstone in frame?
