Guy at the camera store told me to just buy a lab scanner and I almost laughed in his face
I was at a camera store in Sacramento last week picking up some chemistry and the guy behind the counter told me home scanning is a waste of time and I should just pay a lab. He quoted me $18 a roll for dev plus scans and acted like that was a deal. Do the math on 40 rolls a year and that is $720 gone, which buys a solid used scanner and pays for itself. I have been scanning my own negatives for 3 years now and the control I get over color and contrast beats any lab preset. Labs are great for dev, but handing over my scans means I lose the look I actually want. If you scan at home, what is your setup and how long does a roll take you?
Wait, $18 a roll? That is wild. I mean I knew labs charged a lot but that still caught me off guard. 40 rolls a year at that price is basically paying for a whole new camera, no way.
