Watching a local theater group's version of 'Romeo and Juliet' made me think about a different ending.
Their modern take had the families actually listen to the Friar's letter, so the final scene was just two very confused, alive teenagers staring at each other in the tomb.

That version sounds like it would completely change the play's meaning. The whole tragedy is built on that missed connection and the rush of young love. If they just stand there alive, you lose the lesson about how pointless the feud was. It becomes a weird comedy of errors instead of a warning. I guess it's interesting to think about, but Shakespeare might be rolling in his grave.

Honestly, I saw a modern take where they both lived but the families still fell apart. It hit harder for me because the pointless feud kept going even without the deaths. That version made the warning way more real and less like a sad fairy tale.

My friend's theater group did a version like that in college. They had Romeo and Juliet survive but get stuck in this awful, bitter divorce while their families kept fighting over custody of their kid. It was brutal to watch because the hate just kept recycling into new shapes. The whole thing felt less like a love story and more like a documentary on a family court case. Honestly, it made the original seem almost kind by comparison.
