Titanic could have ended 10 minutes earlier and been better

Last month I rewatched Titanic for the first time in maybe 15 years. The ending where old Rose throws the diamond into the ocean always bugged me, but this time I saw it differently. What if the movie just ended with Rose asleep and the dream sequence fading out? That last scene with the jewel feels like the director didn't trust the audience. I get that it's supposed to show she let go of the past, but it cheapens the whole story. My friend argued the diamond was the only proof she was there, so letting it go made sense. I still think cutting it and ending on the ship deck reunion would land harder. Has anyone else tried mentally deleting that final scene and liked the movie more?
