TIL paying $280 for a cheap phone gimbal for my nephew's birthday was a waste, and now I get why everyone says just use your hands
My nephew turns 14 next week and he's been filming these little skate videos around town on his phone, so I figured a gimbal would be the perfect gift and dropped $280 on one at the mall. I tested it out myself first, walking around my block in Mesa for like 45 minutes trying to get smooth shots, and honestly the footage looked WORSE than when he just holds the phone with two hands. The gimbal kept doing this weird drift thing where the horizon would slowly tilt, and by the time I noticed, half my clips were ruined. I spent an hour watching a guy on YouTube explain calibration and it still didn't fix it. Then I remembered this skate video my nephew showed me last month, filmed entirely handheld, and it looked awesome because the shakes actually made it feel real and fast. So now I'm stuck with a $280 thing I can't return because I opened it. I could wrap it anyway but that feels like giving someone a chore. Do I just eat the loss and get him a $20 case of grip tape instead, or is there some trick to these things I'm missing?
