Thinking about a different ending for The Mist after paying $12 for the DVD

I picked up The Mist on DVD for $12 at a pawn shop last weekend because I remembered people arguing about the ending. I watched it and man, that theater ending is brutal and sad. But I keep thinking what if the mist just lifted and they saw the military had won days ago. That would have changed the whole feel of the movie. Has anyone else imagined a happier alternate ending for that story?

Wondered the same thing after I watched it. But wouldn't that kind of undercut the whole point of the movie? I mean, if the military just shows up and everything's fine, then the mist is just a weather problem. The whole horror is that people become the real monsters when they're scared. Like Mrs. Carmody's whole cult thing. Doesn't that ending work better because it makes you really think about what people do when they panic?
