The Before and After of Movie Endings Since Streaming Took Over
I caught the 1997 version of Titanic again last night and it got me thinking. Movies from the 90s and early 2000s used to have these long, slow ending scenes with the credits rolling over quiet music. Now everything ends with a huge action beat or a cliffhanger right before the credits hit. I think streaming changed it because they want you to click right into the next episode. The old endings let you sit with the story for a minute. Does anyone else miss those calm fade outs or am I just getting old?

Wait is this how movies used to be? I gotta be honest I never really thought about it before but you're totally right. I used to think those long slow endings were boring honestly, like just get to the credits already. But now that you mention it, the old way let you breathe after everything wrapped up. Titanic's ending with the old Rose dream and the orchestra fading out, that stuck with me way longer than the loud explosions in modern movies. Streaming definitely trained us to binge instead of sit with the moment. I remember watching The Brown Bunny and the ending just hung there for a minute and it hit different.

oh i dont know about titanic though @lisa671, didnt that ending still have the big band playing and people cheering? i mean it was emotional but it was still pretty loud and dramatic. the brown bunny ending though yeah that one just sits there and makes you feel something, totally different vibe.
