Rewatching I Am Legend and I still can't get over how much better the original ending was

I wasted $14 on the DVD back in 2007 just to find out the theater version chopped the ending where the monsters were actually just trying to get their leader back, so now I have to warn anyone buying a used copy to check if it's the alternate cut because the theatrical ending ruins the whole point of the movie for me, has anyone else had buyer's remorse on a movie because of a bad ending switch?

Totally agree, the alternate ending is the only one that makes sense. Had the same frustration with The Butterfly Effect where the director's cut completely changes the message. Theatrical releases feel like they're scared of the audience having a deeper thought.

Right? The studio always wants that safe vanilla ending. @paul_lane80 it's like they think we're all too dumb to handle a movie that doesn't wrap up with a neat little bow, and that Butterfly Effect cut really proved how much guts the original had.
