Picked the sad ending for my book club reading last week

Had to choose between the original happy ending and an alternate tragic one for a community reading of "The Night Circus." Went with the sad version since nobody in my group had tried it before. Three people stopped talking to me for two days after the meeting.

Lost three friends for a week over Vonnegut's original ending.

Oh man, that's rough. I once lost a whole afternoon explaining to my sister why the original ending of Slaughterhouse-Five is actually way better, and she just stared at me like I'd grown a second head. Honestly though, I think losing friends over Vonnegut is a rite of passage. I'd rather argue about that than, say, the ending of Lost where we still don't know what the deal with the polar bears was. Not that I'm still bitter about the polar bears. But your friends came back after a week, right? Mine still bring up the time I tried to defend the Shawshank ending where Red takes the bus.
