My friend said the ending of 'The Dark Knight Rises' should have been Bruce Wayne's death, and after rewatching it last week, I think he was totally right.

Nah, I have to disagree. Bruce living and finally getting a normal life was the whole point. He spent three movies being Batman, he earned that happy ending with Selina. Him dying would have just been sad for no reason.
