Lost $40 on a movie ending that made no sense at all

I paid $40 for a special edition Blu-ray of The Village just to see if the alternate ending was better. Total waste. The disc had this whole section with deleted scenes and a different closer. But the alternate ending was just the same twist explained slower. Like someone thought we were too dumb to get it the first time. I sat through 15 minutes of credits and menus for nothing. My buddy warned me but I had to see for myself. Has anyone else bought a whole new release just for the alternate ending and felt ripped off?

just the same twist explained slower" yeah that's the worst. I actually think the issue is that studios make these "alternate endings" just to sell more copies not because they're any good. The Village is a perfect example because M. Night's original ending is already pretty clear if you pay attention. They probably shot that alternate version just to have something to put on the Blu-ray menu. I haven't bought a movie just for an alternate ending since like 2004 and I learned my lesson. The only time it actually works is if the theatrical ending got changed because of studio interference or bad test screenings. Otherwise you're just paying for deleted scenes that were deleted for a reason.

You’ve got the right idea, but I think you’re being a little too generous to the studios. The Village alternate ending wasn’t just for the Blu-ray-it actually got a wide release in some theaters overseas. I remember reading about it back then, and the whole thing was a mess because the overseas cut changed the tone completely. It showed the creatures walking around the woods at night, which ruined the whole point of the movie. You’re right though, the original ending was clear enough if you paid attention. That overseas version just proved that sometimes the studio interferes even after the movie comes out.
