Just worked out a different ending for 'Casablanca'

My film class thought it was a neat improvement.

Rick actually leaving with Ilsa? That guts the whole point of the movie. The bitter, noble sacrifice is what makes it hit so hard. Changing that feels like missing the point completely.

You know what, why mess with something that already works? Rick staying is the whole movie. He puts the world ahead of his own happiness. If he gets on that plane, it's just another love story. That last scene at the foggy airport, him letting her go, that's what sticks with you. It's not about a neat ending, it's about doing the hard right thing. Changing that guts it.
