Just realized the ending of The Mist was almost totally different in the book

I was reading the Wikipedia page for Stephen King's The Mist last night, and it says the story's ending is way more open-ended than the movie's famous one. The movie has that brutal, shocking finale, but King left it vague with the characters just driving off into the fog. Has anyone else been caught off guard by a movie changing a book's ending that drastically?

Oh man, that really gets me... I read the book years ago and the open ending was so perfect for that creeping dread. When I saw the movie I was completely gutted by how they changed it, like I honestly couldn't believe they went there. It's one of those rare cases where I think both endings work but for totally different reasons, and I still get a little choked up thinking about that theater experience.

It's just a movie man, not that deep.
