Just realized the ending of 'The Dark Knight' could have been way more interesting

I was rewatching it last night and the whole 'Harvey Dent cover-up' felt forced. What if Batman had actually taken the blame for the murders, but then left Gotham for good? The city would have to face its own corruption without a symbol to hide behind. It would have been a darker, more honest ending about real change. Anyone have a better alternate take on that final scene?

I always thought the cover-up was necessary, but your version is way more compelling.

Ha! That's rich coming from me, the guy who once tried to "cover up" a coffee spill by putting a plant on it. @corad84 is right though - the longer you wait, the worse it gets. I remember a buddy tried to cover up a dent in his truck with a bumper sticker that said "I Brake for Yard Sales." Three months later the whole thing rusted out and cost him triple to fix. So yeah, maybe the truth hurts less than the bill does.

Cover-ups just make the truth harder to find later.
