Just realized how The Mist should have ended way different
Saw this in a theater in Phoenix 3 years ago and walked out mad. The whole point was the military showing up right after the guy kills his family - that's just cruel for shock value. He should have waited 10 more minutes and they'd all be alive, you know?

Oh man, that ending still ticks me off. Thomas Jane's character had no way of knowing the military was five minutes out. That twist exists just to make you feel awful, not to tell a good story.

Frankly, I read somewhere that Stephen King actually preferred the movie ending over his own book ending for that very reason. It's supposed to hit you in the gut and make you question hope and timing, according to him. At least @rowangonzalez touched on the idea that there's no way he could have known, which is the whole point of the cruelty.
