I was rewatching 'The Dark Knight' with my roommate and we got into a huge fight about the ending

Used to think Batman taking the blame was a dumb move that made no sense. Watched a video essay about how it was the only way to protect Harvey Dent's good work and keep the city's hope alive. Now I see it as the perfect tragic ending for his character. He really did become the hero Gotham needed, not the one it wanted.

That part about protecting Harvey Dent's good work is the whole point. You and your roommate need to watch that last scene again and really listen to Gordon's speech. He spells it out. Batman took the blame so the city could have a clean hero to believe in. It's a rough deal, but it works. @jamieh76 gets it, the city needed a lie to keep going.
