I tried to write a better ending for The Mist and it took me 11 days to see why mine was worse
Two weeks ago I decided the ending of The Mist was too mean, so I sat down to write my own version where they get rescued in the parking lot. I figured it would take one evening, maybe two. Eleven days later I had nine drafts and every single one felt flat, and I could not say why. My wife read draft four out loud and said it sounded like a grocery list with a happy sticker on it. That is when it hit me: the whole story is built on that gut punch, so a nice ending turns the movie into a long walk with no point. I still think there is a version where hope and dread share the last scene, but I could not find it. If you have ever rewritten a bleak ending and made it work, what did you change, and did you keep the sad part in?
