I thought the Titanic should have missed the iceberg but the real ending works better

I used to think the movie Titanic would have been better if the ship just missed the iceberg and everyone lived. But after rewatching it last month, I realized the actual ending makes the love story stick with you way more. Does anyone else think a happy ending would have made that movie forgettable?

Come on, "nobody would even remember that movie now" is a stretch. A lot of people would still remember it for the special effects and the sheer scale of the sinking. And swapping out the sad ending for a happy one doesn't automatically make the rest of the movie forgettable.

Oh man, totally agree with you there. If Jack hopped off that door and the ship just sailed on to New York, nobody would even remember that movie now. That sad ending is what makes it hit so hard, like when Rose lets him go at the end and she's old and telling the story. Even the little moments like the band playing while the ship goes down feel way more powerful because you know it's over for them. A happy ending would have just been another love story you forget about after a week.
