I finally watched the director's cut of The Mist and I wish I had skipped it

I rented The Mist on Amazon back in March because a coworker named Dana kept telling me the ending was brutal, but I did not know there were two versions. The one I got has the lady with the two kids surviving at the very end, and it felt so much weaker than the one where he gets out of the car. It got me thinking that the movie works better if the monsters win and everyone just dies in the pharmacy. Which version do you think fits the story better, or is there a third ending you would write?
