I finally get why people hate the LOTR movie ending now
After reading the book's Scouring of the Shire for the third time, I saw how the movie's fade-to-gray ending skips the whole point that Hobbits actually changed from their journey, and now I can't watch the last 20 minutes without yelling at my TV, so how do you all fix that ending without adding another hour?
That bit where Frodo comes home and can't even settle back into Bag End is the part that gets me, he saved the Shire but it's not really for him anymore. The movie sort of hints at it with that look he gives Sam, but then it just jumps to the boat and skips all the messy middle. You could shave the Scouring down to like five minutes by just showing the four of them walking back into Hobbiton and nobody gets what they went through.
