Had to choose between the book's original ending and the movie's ending for my book club pick last month

I went with the book's sadder ending because I felt like it fit the characters better, but half the group said the movie's happier version would have made for a better discussion. Has anyone else dealt with picking one version over the other for a group read?

Which book was it? I feel like that context makes a huge difference in whether the sad ending was the right call or not.
