Had to choose between letting Frodo die or having the eagles fly him in at the end of Return of the King

I went with Frodo dying on Mount Doom and Sam having to carry the ring back alone. My buddy said it was too dark but I think it made the victory feel earned. Still, watching Sam struggle through Mordor for 45 extra minutes at 2 AM was rough lol. Anyone else try a darker ending and regret it?
