A friend pointed out my alternate endings were always just 'darker'

I mean, I used to think a better ending just meant making it more grim, like having Frodo keep the Ring or Luke Skywalker join Vader. My buddy in Austin said that's lazy and asked why I never tried a weirdly happy or just plain different outcome. So now I try for one that's not just sad, like maybe in 'The Dark Knight', Harvey Dent gets exposed but lives, and the city has to deal with that messy truth instead of a clean lie. Anyone else get stuck in a rut with their ending ideas?

Yeah, that's a solid way to look at it.

Used to hate bittersweet endings honestly. Wanted everything tied up neat with a bow. But some stories just earn that darkness, you know? Like the whole journey doesn't make sense if everyone walks away smiling. That ending has to earn its weight. Changed my whole view on what a good story actually needs.

Sometimes a darker ending just fits the story better.
