Why does nobody talk about labeling zone wires before they disappear into the wall?
I've been doing installs around Dayton for about 11 years now and the one thing I keep seeing on takeover jobs is unlabeled zone wiring. Last month I pulled a panel off a house off Far Hills and there were 16 zone wires hanging there with zero tags, no notes, nothing. The homeowner had a list from the old company that said 'front, back, garage, motion' and that was it. I spent about 3 hours toning and walking each zone with a helper because guessing wrong on a motion in the master bedroom wakes people up at 2am. My habit is a wrap of masking tape and a Sharpie on each conductor before it goes in the box, takes maybe two minutes per wire and it has saved me way more than that on callbacks. Your mileage may vary depending on how tight the panel is, but I don't skip it anymore. Curious how you all handle it, do you tag at the panel, at the device, or both?
