PSA: Ran all my zone wiring in one big home run to the panel for 3 jobs before a guy in Springfield asked why my keypad was so slow
I used to pull every device back to the can, thinking fewer splices meant fewer callbacks. Then on a 2 story in Springfield with 14 zones my keypad took almost 2 seconds to show status. He asked if I had star topped it or run it as a bus. That was the moment I realized I had been treating every panel like it was still 2004. Switched to home runs for keypads only and bus for the rest, and the lag went away. Still not sure I have it right for bigger houses. What are you all doing for keypad runs on anything over 10 zones?
The part about treating every panel like it was still 2004 got me. I did the same thing for years, pulled 12 zones back to the can on a lake house and spent a whole Saturday landing wires like I was getting paid by the splice. Keypad sat there blinking at me like it was still waking up from a nap. Meanwhile the guy who wired the place next door ran his keypads homerun and bused everything else, and his keypads popped up before mine even finished thinking. Funny how a two second delay is what finally teaches you what a data bus is for.
