Old trick for fishing wire through finished walls that actually saved my back

I was on a job last month in an old row home where the homeowner wanted a keypad in the hallway but there was no attic access above. Trying to fish wire down from a top plate was killing my shoulders after the third try. An old timer at the supply house told me to try using a glow rod with a magnetic tip instead of the standard fish tape for finished walls. I gave it a shot on a lark and ran the wire in under 10 minutes without any drywall repair. Anyone else had luck with that method or do you stick with fish tape for most jobs?

Glow rods are great for short runs but that magnetic tip trick only works if you don't have insulation in the wall. In those old row homes they usually have rockwool or nothing up there, so it's fine. But try that in a newer house with fiberglass batts and the magnet won't grab anything through all that fluff. Fish tape is still king when you've got insulation or more than one floor to deal with.

Sometimes running it through a cold air return works better than the wall.
