Trainer told me I was torquing bolts wrong after 8 years of doing it my way, who do you trust more the book or the old timer?

This guy with 30 years experience showed me a trick for getting feel on critical fasteners that goes totally against the torque chart but he swore it saved his career twice, what side of that debate do you land on?

Man that's a tough spot to be in. It is hard to ignore someone with that much time in the trade, especially when they claim it saved their bacon. But you also have to wonder why the book says what it says, those numbers come from somewhere.
