PSA: Found a cracked engine mount on a Cessna 172 at my shop in Bakersfield last Tuesday
The crack was hidden behind a layer of old grease and I only spotted it because I used a bright flashlight at an angle like my old mentor taught me, has anyone else found hidden damage that way?

Wait, you found it with just a flashlight at an angle? That is exactly how I caught a cracked spar on a Piper once. The grease hid it completely. I almost missed it. That old mentor trick saved my butt too. Good on you for looking close.

That angled light trick works in so many places beyond planes, honestly. Ever tried it on a car hood after a long highway drive, you catch every little rock chip and hairline crack that straight light just slides right over. Same with checking welds on a trailer or even spotting water damage on a ceiling at home. It’s like the universe hides all its real secrets under glare and shadow, you just gotta pick the right moment to look. Makes you wonder what else we’re all missing just because we’re staring straight at it.
