Old timer at the hangar told me to torque bolts to 'feel' on a Cessna 172

I was replacing a cylinder on a Cessna 172 last month at the Miami shop, and a 30 year mechanic walked over and said just tighten the head bolts to 'feel' because the torque wrench is overkill. I went along with it, torqued em by hand, and then found out the cylinder was leaking compression on three cylinders after just one run up. Now I gotta pull it all apart again. Has anyone else had old school advice backfire like this?

Hand tighten is for oil filters, not cylinder bolts on an aircraft.

Exactly. Saw a guy do that once. Cylinder blew right through the cowling.

Follow the damn manual, saved me from redoing a top overhaul twice.
