New digital torque adapters are making us forget how to feel a bolt
I used to break out the old beam wrench on landing gear bolts every single morning. Three years ago our lead mechanic in Tucson switched us over to digital adapters and now nobody even picks up a plain wrench anymore. Yesterday I watched a guy strip a 1/2 inch NAS bolt because he trusted the screen reading over the drag in his hand. The adapter said 185 inch-pounds but the fastener was already binding at 160. I get that digital is faster and keeps records, but we lost something when we stopped feeling the fastener talk back. Anyone else think the newer guys rely too heavy on the electronics and not enough on touch? Is it just me or is that a safety issue hiding in plain sight?
