Guy at the hangar next to ours asked if I torque by feel, and I still laugh about it
About 6 months ago I was doing a brake job on a King Air at a small field outside Wichita, and the mechanic from the hangar next door wandered over to watch. He stood there for a bit while I ran the torque wrench on the caliper bolts, then asked me straight faced if I ever just torque by feel since the wrench slows you down. I laughed because I figured he was kidding, but he wasn't. He started telling me about his system for guessing torque based on how the bolt feels when it stops turning, and he was dead serious. I kept working and let him talk, mostly because I didn't know what to say without starting an argument I didn't want at 7 in the morning. The wildest part was he's been turning wrenches longer than I've been alive. Has anyone else run into an old timer who swears by something that would make your A&P instructor's head spin?
