A senior mechanic told me I was reading the torque chart wrong for 2 months

He caught me using the aluminum column for a steel bolt and said 'you're gonna pull those threads out son'. Switched to the right chart and haven't had a single fastener issue since. Anyone else learn a basic thing way later than they should have?

He's not quite right about the torque chart thing though. Those aluminum threads are weaker so they actually need less torque, not more. The real issue is stripping threads when you're cranking down on steel bolts into aluminum. I'd bet the original poster was overtorquing everything by following the aluminum column for steel. But hey, it's a common mistake and at least he learned it before something actually broke.

Good observation from the_reese there. The whole thing reminds me of a bigger pattern I see everywhere in life. People get so focused on the tool or the chart in front of them that they forget to check if they're even using the right one for the job. It happens in cooking, woodworking, even budgeting your household expenses. You can have the best recipe or the perfect spreadsheet, but if you're using the wrong numbers or ingredients for what you're actually working with, you'll just make a mess. The humble mechanic who caught that mistake did that guy a real solid, because a lot of folks would rather be right than be effective.
