Took me 3 years of mall crawling to figure out why my flashlight kept dying

I was always using fresh batteries and still getting dim light after 20 minutes in a dark corridor. Turns out the cheap alkaline ones can't handle the cold from broken AC units in these old places. Has anyone else noticed their gear acting weird when the temp drops below 50?

Cold temps don't mess with batteries unless you're buying dollar store junk. Good lithium primaries or even quality NiMH cells will run fine in freezing weather. Sounds like you were just using bad batteries.

Oh man, you hit the nail on the head. I've run Eneloops in my headlamp during winter camping trips and they held up way better than I expected, even when it was below zero. The real trick is that lithium primaries actually perform better in the cold than alkaline cells, not worse. So if someone's gear dies in the freezing weather, it's almost always because they grabbed the cheap blue and white packs at the checkout counter. Have you ever tried the lithium AAAs for things like bike lights or remote sensors in the winter?
