The security guard at the dead Northgate Mall in Seattle told me to go in through the old Sears loading dock, and he was dead right
Last month I drove up to the Northgate Mall in Seattle, which has been mostly empty since 2019 and is getting torn down for a new hockey arena. I parked by the old Sears and spent 20 minutes trying the main doors like an idiot. A security guard in a golf cart rolled up and instead of chasing me off, he said the loading dock on the northeast side had a broken latch and I could just walk in. I figured it was a trap or he was messing with me, but I tried it anyway. The latch was busted exactly like he said, and I ended up in a pitch black stockroom with 8 foot piles of old JCPenney signage and a fully stocked vending machine from 2017 with a Snickers still in it. The guard even caught up with me later and gave me a mini tour of the old food court, which still had the tables bolted down and a dusty Carousel horse someone left behind. I got about 40 photos before he politely said I had to leave because the demo crews were coming Monday. Sometimes the guy in the uniform is your best tour guide, has anyone else had a guard actually help them get inside a dead mall?
That vending machine detail kills me, a Snickers from 2017 just sitting there like a tiny museum piece. I once spent 45 minutes at a dead mall in Ohio trying every door and got nothing but a sore shoulder and a weird look from a guy walking his dog. My big win that day was finding a penny on the ground. You had a golf cart guard giving you a full tour and a carousel horse, which is basically a VIP pass compared to my loser laps around the parking lot. Guess I need to start being nicer to guys in uniforms.
