The dry fountain at Hillside Mall, whose history is it anyway?

Stopped by the old Hillside Mall outside Raleigh last weekend, the one with the massive fountain that's been dry since 2004. I was taking photos of the tile work when a security guard walked up and told me I couldn't post pictures of the fountain because the mall's new owner plans to sell the basin to a salvage company. That got me thinking, when a mall closes, do the memories belong to the people who shopped there or the people who own the concrete now? I remember my kids throwing pennies in that fountain every back-to-school trip, but the guy with the keys says it's just inventory. Has anyone else run into a property owner trying to block photos or claim rights to the old fixtures?

Saw a news piece about malls selling chunks of history for scrap, it's SO sad how fast they gut the heart.
